01 / Corey Smith · Software engineer

Full-stack
software engineerwith 13+ years building and operating commercial applications.

I take responsibility for the whole system: backend architecture, full-stack development, native clients, deployment, and the support that comes after launch.

Let’s talk engineering

02 / Selected engineering

Two products.
Whole-system thinking.

I built all of the software for Chat and Dex. Walt led product design. Here are a few of the decisions behind the interfaces.

01 / Communication & shared spaces

Followell Chat

Rooms for conversations, shared information, and voice and video calls.

My contribution — Backend, web and native client software, real-time protocols, and deployment tooling. Product design by Walt.

  • Elixir / Phoenix
  • PostgreSQL / Ecto
  • LiveView
  • SwiftUI
  • Kotlin / Compose
  • WebRTC / coturn

Keep workspace boundaries in the backend

Room-channel joins resolve a room through both the authenticated workspace and user. Durable events drive client catch-up; live room notifications prompt a sync. This keeps transient socket delivery separate from persisted history, at the cost of maintaining event cursors and reconciliation in the clients.

Repair signaling without discarding healthy media

The native call code separates WebSocket signaling from the WebRTC peer connection. A replacement socket can rejoin while preserving connected media; generation checks reject stale asynchronous work. That adds lifecycle complexity, but avoids making every signaling interruption a full media teardown.

02 / Business communication

Dex

A shared place for customer messages, calls, voicemail, and team follow-up.

My contribution — Backend, web and native client software, telephony integration, and billing and provisioning workflows. Product design by Walt.

  • Elixir / Phoenix
  • PostgreSQL / Ecto
  • LiveView
  • SwiftUI
  • Oban
  • Twilio / Stripe

Coordinate competing audio owners

Customer phone calls and internal employee calls compete for the same microphone and speaker. A PostgreSQL transaction advisory lock serializes device ownership across those call types; unique active-claim constraints back the phone-call slots. This makes the database part of call admission, trading extra coordination for an explicit shared ownership rule.

Separate payment from permission to provision

The provisioning worker rechecks the selected number, confirmation, onboarding revision, billing authorization, and whether managed service is enabled before requesting provider resources. Independent gates add operational steps, but keep payment state from being treated as proof that a phone line is ready.

Managed billing and number setup are not fully enabled. The complete paid-customer setup flow still needs validation.

03 / Experience

Built it.
Ran it.
Supported it.

Jan 2026–present

Followell

Founder / Software engineer

Building Chat and Dex across server, web, native clients, and operations. My production Elixir/Phoenix work began in January 2026, following earlier experimentation.

2012–Jan 2026

Bandwise

Ruby / Rails developer & systems administrator

Built 10+ custom applications, with responsibility for architecture, deployment, servers, and customer support.

04 / Next chapter

A builder who stays
with the work.

I’m seeking a remote senior full-stack or backend role where I can own meaningful systems and work closely with the people who depend on them.
